Program Description

The Bachelor of Science in Marine Engineering (B. Sc. in Marine Engineering) is a Under graduation degree program at Marine Fisheries Academy under Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Maritime University, Bangladesh that deals with the study of build large, efficient and fast cargo, tanker and other commercial ships and Fishing vessels. Also provides scientific-technical training and the methodology necessary for marine propulsion, electrical, refrigeration, and steering systems, its operation and maintenance as well as controlling the installation and operation of the ship and care for persons on board at the operational and managerial level of marine engineering.

Marine engineers work in the engine departments of cargo ships, dredges, offshore supply and drill vessels, floating production storage and offtake facilities, oil tankers, passenger ships and tugs. They need to be familiar with various types of diesel engines, steam plant and gas turbines.

The Syllabus for the 4-Year “Bachelor of Science in Marine Engineering” is according to the requirements of STCW conventions as amended of IMO and that of the Department of Shipping, Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh which enhances competencies required for “Officer-in-Charge of an Engineering Watch (OICEW)”.

The theoretical subjects include, apart from English, which is the most widely understood and used language in merchant fleet of ocean-going ships, computer science, applied mathematics, physics, thermodynamics, I C Engines, pumps, refrigeration, boilers, electronics and marine management. Besides these there are also many other topics that are covered and students are educated regarding environmental science, maritime commerce and control systems etc.

Candidates who wish to study in Marine Fisheries Academy in B. Sc. in Marine Engineering course must have completed SSC (Science) or ‘O’ level and HSC (Science) or ‘A’ level or equivalent examination with Mathematics and Physics with GPA 3.5 separately and overall GPA must have 3.5.

Career Path after Marine Engineering

After Successful completion of sea training and Class III Exam a company will provide promotion to the Third Engineer on the basis of experience and performance. On completion of required sea time as a third engineer, one can appear Class II Exam to become a Second Engineer. Similarly, on completion of necessary sea time and gaining a good amount of experience, a second engineer can appear Class I Exam to get promotion as Chief Engineer.
